I have read many Suzuki's theme books, one of them is "When love is deep", recommended by my teacher trainer. Some of the chapter discuss about parents, one of the important parts in the success of a child's education and life. Parents involvement is crucial, however it needs to be balanced. Under involvement or indifference is as detrimental as over involvement or controlling. In the book, it stated that commonly there are four types of parents that make child poor at music study.

The first one is the "horse mentality mother", to them everything is a race, life is a competition, they rush their child to achieve something, many times they find themselves comparing their child with others for source of motivation. This kind of mentality will bring incompetent child, a child should be able to develop at his/her own rate without the need of their parents constantly pushed and whipped them. If that child felt that they always in need to chase something, they develop the lack of focus, as they have to constantly move on to the next thing ahead without gaining the proper skills that might be just acquired. Please for your own child's sake
be patient and enjoy the ride, they will grow to their maximum potential with the proper nurturing attitude from the parents.

The second one is the parents who complains to the teacher in the child's presence, for example "he did not want to practice this week, he is lazy and so and so. The child become strong at his/her laziness and grow to fulfill all the label that has been put for that child. Labeling a child is a dangerous act to do, a child with its pure mind will follow whatever you have decided to make them. Parents please be careful on the words you said to your child.

The third one is the "busy-bee" parents, they have the phrase such as " we have been really busy this week, we have missed our practicing, but this morning he practice for one whole hour."
Walla! This kind of thinking is not suitable whenever one wants to grow a skillful child. When growing or planting a tree, water is needed each and everyday to make a healthy growing plant. If the watering only happened every fortnightly by adding fifteen liter of water at once, the result will be a deteriorating root. Therefore practice everyday for half hour is much better than seven hours straight in a day. Parents, please organise your time to practice at the exact same time everyday. Children love routinity, it helps to create a character of discipline in them which is important for the later stage of their life.

The fourth one is the "over critical parents", they have the need to criticise their child constantly, "there you got it wrong, too loud, too slow, too fast". Please consider your child feeling when you want to criticise your child. No one likes to be criticised, if you find it hard to not correct their mistake, please praise the correct things first, then find words that are just and fair to correct the mistake.

I think I can find all those four types of parents in myself as a teacher sometimes, therefore I need to read and re-read the Shinichi Suzuki's words over and over again to develop the art of wonderful teaching.
